Microbiology Laboratory Specialist II

The Microbiology Laboratory Specialist operates under the guidance of the Microbiology supervisor, executing complex bacteriological, parasitological, and serological tests that necessitate analytical skills and interpretation. These tasks are conducted in accordance with established protocols outlined in the Procedure Manual. Quality control measures are integrated into each testing process to ensure accurate diagnostic information for healthcare providers. All responsibilities are performed in alignment with age-specific standards relevant to job-related policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies, demonstrating leadership in self-management, team collaboration, or organizational leadership.
• Conducts both routine and advanced laboratory tests in the designated section, considering age or sex-specific values.
• Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instruments, performing minor repairs or coordinating with Biomedical Engineering as necessary.
• Engages in cross-training across various laboratory sections as required.
• Ensures compliance with the laboratory's quality control protocols.
• Accurately calculates, inputs, and verifies laboratory test results.
• Utilizes the Laboratory Information System effectively.
• Communicates and documents critical laboratory findings promptly.
• Manages patient specimens, including their collection, handling, and distribution, while being mindful of pediatric specimen volume requirements.
• Contributes to the assessment, development, and implementation of new or revised testing methodologies and protocols.
• Exhibits proficiency in performing patient care responsibilities that cater to the specific developmental and population needs of patients served by the department.
• Adjusts patient assessment and treatment methods to meet the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, and developmental needs of each individual.
• Upholds the CORE values of CHRISTUS Health in all professional interactions.
• Completes all mandatory compliance and regulatory tasks, adhering to applicable policies and procedures.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined by CLIA regulations.
- OR
- Education evaluated by an acceptable credentialing agency and recognized as equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
- A minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience in the Microbiology department, including specimen inoculation for routine, fungal, and acid-fast cultures; interpretation of stain reactions; identification and drug susceptibility testing; Ova and Parasite procedures; and processing of acid-fast specimens, positive fungal cultures, and serological tests.
- Certification as MT, MLS, CLS, or MLT from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS is required.
- If holding a certification with an expiration date, it must be maintained and kept current.
- New graduates who are Board Certified or eligible (must achieve Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
