Job Description

The Graduate Student Advisor plays a vital role in the Lynch School of Education and Human Development graduate student support team.

As a member of this team, the advisor works closely with students to address their questions and needs, ensuring a seamless experience.

The Graduate Student Advisor fosters a sense of belonging among students by creating 1:1 relationships and providing proactive support.

This role involves assisting matriculated students in navigating their program, building relationships with faculty advisors, departments, and instructors, and supporting students across various segments.

The Graduate Student Advisor also supports the Lynch School of Education and Human Development broadly by contributing to student retention, data reporting, student tracking, and other university-wide initiatives.

This position requires establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with university partners, central student services, faculty, and the wider college community.

The Graduate Student Advisor will be assigned a caseload of students from the graduate student population, depending on student needs in a given semester.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic advising and support to graduate students
  • Develop and maintain relationships with faculty advisors, departments, and instructors
  • Support students across various segments, including those on academic probation
  • Contribute to student retention, data reporting, and student tracking initiatives
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with university partners and central student services

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in higher education or counseling
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience
  • Supervision of student staff in a team environment
  • Superior customer service orientation and focus
  • Advisement and academic counseling skills
  • Ability to work with varying constituencies, including faculty, staff, and students
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Boston College systems is preferred
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills (Excel, FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrable problem-solving skills
  • Ability to provide functional supervision as needed and serve as a technical resource
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, and manage changes to existing systems and implementation of new services
  • Ability to maintain data security and confidentiality of all data at all times
  • Ability to work with others under pressure in order to meet deadlines
