Position Overview:


A registered nurse within the Medicine Journal is tasked with delivering nursing care in accordance with the regulations established by the state's Nurse Practice Act, as well as the organization's care models, policies, and procedures.

The nurse is accountable for the provision of patient care as designated and for overseeing other qualified personnel to whom the nurse has delegated care responsibilities, exercising independent judgment in their practice.

The nurse addresses the physical, spiritual, emotional, and educational needs of patients while coordinating care plans with other healthcare professionals.

The nurse is also responsible for engaging in and completing all patient safety initiatives relevant to their role.

Furthermore, the nurse conducts all duties in alignment with the Mission, Vision, and Values of the Medicine Journal.

The nurse shall execute job responsibilities in accordance with all relevant policies, hospital regulations, and guidelines set forth by accrediting organizations, as well as federal and state regulations.


All bedside nurses will be evaluated using a competency matrix that includes five core areas: Customer Focus; Cost-Effective Care; Communication; Competent Care; and Compassionate Care.

This matrix serves as a framework for nurses based on the Benner Model, tracking staff engagement, advancement, and professional growth.

Educational Requirements:

Mandatory:
Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.

Preferred:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Experience Requirements:

Mandatory:
No prior experience required.

Preferred:
Previous experience in a similar healthcare setting.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

Mandatory:
Current nursing licensure in the state of employment. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be completed prior to unit assignment and maintained thereafter. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications are required within the first year of employment. Additional certifications may be required based on unit specifications.

Preferred:
Nationally recognized certification in the relevant area of practice.

Nursing Role Summary:
The professional nurse ensures safe and effective patient care through the application of evidence-based best practices.

The professional nurse at Medicine Journal:
Utilizes effective communication strategies, including handoff communication and bedside shift reports, to collaborate with other members of the healthcare team.

Maintains a safe therapeutic environment by adhering to hospital policies and procedures, while identifying and reporting potential risks to patient safety.

Conducts and documents comprehensive assessments, interpreting and responding to abnormal diagnostic data.
Anticipates potential emergencies and intervenes appropriately, seeking assistance when necessary.
Establishes a rapport with patients and families that encourages mutual involvement in care planning.
Demonstrates foundational critical thinking skills.
Documents care in a clear, accurate, and complete manner, ensuring compliance with hospital, regulatory, and legal standards.
Completes mandatory education and competency training specific to the patient population served.
Provides culturally competent care to patients and their families.
Exhibits awareness of evidence-based practices.
Employs effective time management skills and meets expectations for attendance and punctuality.
Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling to accommodate the staffing needs of patient care areas.

Communicates effectively with patients, family members, and all members of the interdisciplinary team, seeking assistance for conflict resolution as necessary.

Implements care plans and identifies resources to address patient care needs.

Recognizes and communicates changes in patient conditions that may affect unit staffing levels or the delivery of safe patient care.

Contributes to a positive work environment by demonstrating professional behavior and seeking assistance in resolving interpersonal conflicts.
Takes responsibility for fulfilling educational and mandatory program requirements by completing hospital and unit-based competencies.
Demonstrates knowledge of and positively impacts unit-based performance improvement outcomes.
Updates their individual competency matrix to reflect achievements.
Conducts initial nursing assessments, communicates findings to the assigned physician, evaluates wound stages and measurements, documents care plans, assesses patient status in relation to desired outcomes, and identifies situations requiring intervention.
Participates in quality improvement initiatives, provides education to patients or caregivers, and advocates for patients in the coordination and delivery of care.
