Pet Grooming Assistant Job Description

This role is responsible for enrolling and completing the Paragon training program, a 15-week virtual learning experience that teaches the fundamentals of bathing and grooming, as well as safety, pet first aid, and CPR.

The Grooming Technician in Training will assist in generating business by calling existing and new customers, scheduling appointments, and verifying vaccinations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining regular and predictable attendance
  • Working scheduled shifts and adapting to varied hours, days, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed
  • Providing exceptional customer service and ensuring the safety and well-being of animals
  • Sanitizing and maintaining grooming tools and equipment
  • Assisting with pet handling, bathing, and grooming
  • Completing all documentation associated with job duties

Required qualifications include:

  • Comfort working with dogs and cats
  • Ability to demonstrate patience and compassion for animals
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to read, write, and count accurately

Preferred knowledge, skills, or abilities include:

  • Operating and using all grooming tools and equipment
  • Communicating effectively with associates and customers
  • Displaying compassion with animals and treating them accordingly
  • Exhibiting attention to detail
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to resolve issues ethically and with minimal conflict

Working conditions include:

  • Working environment is favorable, generally working inside with moderate noise
  • Exposure to sharp grooming instruments, perfumed shampoos and soaps, pets, and pet waste
  • Exposure to wet conditions, particularly when bathing dogs
  • Exposure to cats and dogs of all sizes, breeds, and temperaments

Physical requirements include:

  • Ability to move and transfer live animals, equipment, and merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand and maintain a stationary position for up to 8 hours while grooming animals
  • Ability to frequently move for 4-8 hours per day around the salon to groom animals, clean, and maintain the salon
  • Ability to utilize grooming instruments including shears and dryers
  • Ability to occasionally lift or reach merchandise overhead
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and squat frequently to position oneself to groom animals, clean shelves, and stock merchandise and equipment
