As a Financial Counselor at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional patient care by identifying and resolving financial barriers to care. Under indirect supervision, you will work with patients to create a payer source for Inpatient and Outpatient self-pay accounts, ensuring that patients receive the care they need without undue financial burden.
Key Responsibilities:- Uphold Kaiser Permanente's policies and procedures, principles of responsibilities, and applicable state, federal, and local laws.
- Confidentially obtain or review and record patient financial and demographic information.
- Coordinate with inpatient/outpatient admission and registration to identify potential alternate payer sources.
- Interview patients to determine financial status, counsel, and make arrangements for direct payment, potential enrollment in a government-sponsored program, or direct billing to the patient.
- Complete Medical Financial Assistance applications based on analysis of patient financial information.
- Provide functional guidance to support staff and inform support staff and physicians on new and revised processes.
- Act as a patient/member advocate and use knowledge of external and internal Social Services agencies for patient referral.
- Retrospectively review diagnosis and treatment records to identify potential Third Party Liability and Workers Compensation cases.
- Screen for potential eligibility for KP Membership through government programs (Medi-Cal, Medicare, transition plan, etc.).
- Obtain pre-authorizations for services from employers and other insurance carriers.
- Coordinate and collect conversion dues for KP coverage.
- Check patient information against updated eligibility using online systems (Foundations).
- Place telephone calls to the appropriate departments (CSC, Sales and Marketing, etc.) in cases where group eligibility is not updated.
- Ensure that all documentation in the billable jackets is complete and obtain missing or needed information.
- Establish and maintain courteous, cooperative relations with the public, patients, and other personnel.
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in Healthcare billing, collections, or Financial Counseling or equivalent.
- Typing 35 WPM or as required by Medical Center.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of and to utilize Government Programs and alternate payer sources (Workers Compensation, TPL, COB, Commercial, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability in patient registration, admissions, and billing practice required.
- Working evening shifts starting at 3pm-1130pm or 6pm-0230am.
- Working every other weekend and holidays.
- Mon-Sun; Variable.
- This is an on-call position, days and hours may vary.
