POSITION SUMMARY: The Oakland Unified School District is seeking a dedicated individual to fulfill the role of an Athletic Coach. This position involves guiding and training students in the specified sport while fostering a positive and safe environment for athletic development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide instruction and coaching to students in the designated sport.
  • Assist in organizing practice and competition schedules.
  • Fulfill all coaching duties associated with the role.
  • Participate in mandatory meetings and training sessions as required by the district.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must meet the following criteria. Preference will be given to current certificated staff of the Oakland Unified School District who hold a valid California teaching credential.

  • Required certifications include:
  • Injury prevention and treatment:
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications OR proof of completion of a college-level course in athletic injury care OR a valid EMT I or II certification OR a valid Sports Injury Certificate.
  • Certifications in Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Concussion, Heat Illness Prevention, and Fundamentals of Coaching (high school) or Coaching Middle School Training (middle school).
  • COVID Safety training.
  • Provide documented evidence of knowledge in coaching theory and techniques relevant to the sport, which may include college coursework, prior coaching experience, or participation at the high school level.
  • Understanding of the rules and regulations governing the sport at the high school level.
  • Familiarity with adolescent psychology in relation to sports participation, which can be demonstrated through college courses or active involvement in youth sports programs.
  • Ability to maintain high safety standards during practices and competitions.
  • Exhibit high ethical standards regarding sportsmanship, fair play, and student relationships.
  • Recognize the importance of communication with parents/guardians and school staff regarding any issues or emergencies that may arise during events.
  • Knowledge of school policies and California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) regulations related to athletics.

OVERALL ASSESSMENT: Applicants must demonstrate the ability to meet the standards of the district's athletic program, including instilling teamwork, commitment, and discipline among players, building positive relationships with parents and the community, and providing academic support to students. Previous successful coaching experience at the relevant level will be considered an asset in the evaluation of candidates.
