Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least six months of patient care experience within the last two years, or enrolled in a medical-related college program and in clinical rotation.
  • Certifications such as CNA, CMA, PCT, or EMT are preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

About the Special Care Unit:

The Special Care Unit (SCU) is a 26-bed pediatric step-down unit located on the 7th floor of the Benjamin Russell Building at Children's of Alabama. We care for critically ill patients from birth to 18+ years old, with a diverse range of diagnoses. Our patient population requires skilled medical care, and our multidisciplinary team works together to meet their needs. The average patient length of stay is 24 to 72 hours, and our nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:2, with a maximum of 1:3.
