Job Opportunity

The Port Authority of NY & NJ is seeking a Food Service Worker II to join our team in the preparation and service of food at a Port Authority Cafeteria. This role involves working under the supervision of the Facility Cafeteria Supervisor or Food Services Field Supervisor, performing duties according to established procedures and methods.

About the Role
  • This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand continuously in hot and humid conditions.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in preparation and service of food, including cooking in industrial type cafeteria operations, is required.
  • The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution and excellent customer service skills.

Responsibilities
  1. Prepare and serve food to customers, ensuring that it meets production, delivery, and temperature standards.
  2. Check and participate in work to ensure that food is prepared in proper quantity, quality, appearance, and by use of proper methods.
  3. Maintain temperatures and chemical levels as outlined by provided standards.
  4. Perform sales transactions in a timely fashion, enter all sales into cash register to ensure purchases are accurately recorded, make change, accept other acceptable forms of payments, issue receipts to customers, observe customer purchases in the cafe line, and differentiate between standard options.
  5. Store food and supplies in designated areas and containers following standard wrapping, dating, food safety, and rotation procedures.
  6. Estimate and list food items needed for preparation and service.
  7. Assist with loading or unloading and delivering supplies and products.
  8. Replenish condiments, coffee, other beverages, and general supplies.
  9. Set up tables prior to serving time and ensure proper settings.
  10. Take orders from customers and prepare items requiring short preparation.
  11. Complete orders from steam tables and serve customers at multiple stations.
  12. Clean, sanitize, and maintain all assigned work areas, stockroom, counters, food stations, food preparation equipment, serving equipment, dining room equipment, utensils, pots, pans, dishes, glasses, to ensure sanitation standards, including both manual washing and operating mechanical dishwashing machinery.
  13. Report needed maintenance or repairs of equipment used.
  14. Assist in record keeping and reporting as required.
  15. Remove waste, trash, garbage, and clean containers used for this purpose.
  16. Maintain good working relationships with coworkers, customers, administration, and managers.
  17. Resolve customer concerns and report relevant information and concerns to supervision.
  18. Perform related work/duties as required by department management.

Salary and Benefits

The starting annual salary for the Food Service Worker II position is $30,472.00. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, including a professional environment that supports development and recognizes achievement.


Selection Process

All qualified candidates will participate in an oral exam, which will measure their abilities in situational judgment, problem sensitivity, flexibility, decision making, customer service, interpersonal skills, and oral communication. Note: The interview will also include a brief physical component that requires candidates to demonstrate their ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
