Forensic Nurse Examiner

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE RN) provides timely, accurate, and compassionate clinical assessment and care for patients who have been sexually assaulted. This role involves a forensic examination, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, photographic documentation, developing a safety plan before discharge, referrals for medical and psychological follow-up, and participation in legal proceedings while maintaining chain of custody.
Key Responsibilities- Provides comprehensive forensic examination and nursing care to patients who have been sexually assaulted.
- Collaborates with patients, families, and healthcare teams to formulate, coordinate, implement, and evaluate the plan of care.
- Documents medical history and pertinent data, maintains documentation, evidence, and files for forensic cases, and adheres to evidence protocols.
- Coordinates care through the forensic examination and judicial processes related to criminal proceedings.
- Provides courtroom testimony as a fact or expert witness as needed.
- Works with community advocacy centers, law enforcement agencies, and crisis centers to ensure follow-up appointments and referrals are made for patients and families.
- Participates in on-call schedules, responds to designated facilities, and attends training and workshops as approved.
- Associate's Degree in Nursing
- 1 year of nursing experience; SANE experience preferred
- Current SC RN License
- SANE-A and/or SANE-P Certification - Preferred
This role requires regional travel across all Prisma Health sites and a significant amount of on-call work, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
