Waste Collection Assistant

Position Overview:


The Waste Collection Assistant will effectively support drivers and other team members in the safe collection of waste materials from residential areas.


Primary Duties:
Assist in the collection of waste and recyclable materials from customer locations and/or curbside as necessary.

Load waste materials into the designated compartments of the collection vehicle.

Sort recyclables and ensure proper placement in the collection truck's compartments when applicable.


Support the driver in the safe maneuvering of the vehicle by providing guidance during reversing and navigating tight spaces.

Operate the vehicle's equipment to compact waste materials.

Conduct pre-trip audits of the collection vehicle to ensure all necessary equipment is present (e.g., broom, shovel, etc.).

Promptly report any customer-related issues to the driver.

Identify and tag prohibited waste items, ensuring their removal from waste containers.

Adhere to all safety protocols and equipment checks while performing duties. Comply with all applicable federal, state, local, and company safety regulations.

Collaborate with supervisors to enhance routing efficiency.

Maintain quality standards for predetermined routes.

Ensure the use of all required personal protective equipment at all times (e.g., gloves, reflective vests, safety glasses, work boots, etc.).

Demonstrate a professional demeanor and appearance at all times, especially when interacting with customers and the public while in uniform.

Assist the driver in maintaining cleanliness in both the interior and exterior of the vehicle.


Provide assistance as needed in sorting, cleaning waste containers, organizing the warehouse, stacking pallets, and operating the cardboard compactor.

Participate in safety and branch meetings.

Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:


Requirements:

High school diploma or GED preferred, but not mandatory.

One (1) to three (3) months of relevant experience and/or training preferred, but not mandatory.

Valid driver's license is a plus, but not required.

Must meet the criteria for safety-sensitive functions as per company standards.

Skills and Abilities:
Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively with others.

Ability to follow instructions and perform tasks with minimal supervision.

Capability to operate necessary equipment to fulfill job responsibilities.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift in an outdoor environment for the majority of the time.

Must possess the ability to use hands and fingers, kneel, crawl, talk, hear, climb, and maintain balance.

Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Ability to regularly lift/move up to 65 pounds.

Ability to push/move up to 100 pounds with assistance from another team member.

Work Environment:
Regular exposure to loud noises, humidity, rain, extreme temperatures (hot and cold), moving mechanical parts, vibrations, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.

Work primarily in an outdoor setting throughout the day.

Continuous travel away from the branch location during work hours.

Occasional work in high or precarious places.

Constantly navigate motor vehicle traffic conditions.

Typically, a loud work environment.
