POSITION SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the Shelter Manager or Program Supervisor, the Shelter Services Advocate is tasked with fostering an environment that empowers participants, enhances their well-being, and bolsters their ability to live safely and independently. The Advocate's primary role is to ensure that participants' fundamental needs are met, including food, clothing, and shelter, while ensuring their safety and support within the shelter program. This role involves providing trauma-informed engagement and services to all participants, emphasizing the importance of building healthy relationships to empower individuals and assist them in their healing journey.

EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

  • A high school diploma, supplemented by additional courses or specialized training at a business or community college, or other formal training programs. The ability to comprehend and execute assigned responsibilities effectively is essential.
  • Other (Specify): A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, with at least one (1) year of experience in the domestic violence sector or with a related demographic and children. Two (2) years of experience is preferred. Experience working with adults and children exposed to domestic violence or related groups is required.

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience ranging from one to two years is required.

  • Staff lacking the experience requirement must have at least six (6) months of experience in the domestic violence sector or with a related demographic and complete the following prior to independently providing direct services:
  1. Initial training
  2. 80 hours of shadowing a qualified staff member in the same role
  3. 40 hours of being shadowed by a qualified staff member in the same role
  4. Enhanced six (6) months training and a close supervision plan submitted to the relevant authority within the first week of employment.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics and trauma-informed care is highly desirable. The ability to engage, empower, and communicate effectively, respectfully, and empathetically with survivors from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives is essential. Availability to work evenings, overnight shifts, and weekends is required. Must be capable of working independently and with minimal supervision. On certain shifts, the Shelter Services Advocate may be the sole staff member on duty.

ADDITIONAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • A valid driver's license, a clear driving record, and the use of a personal vehicle for participant transportation as needed, along with a willingness to travel as required.
  • This position is subject to a criminal background check, and continued employment is contingent upon a clear record.
  • Ongoing employment in this role is contingent upon successful completion of CPR, CPI, and/or van driving training as necessary to ensure the ability to perform essential job functions.
  • Ongoing employment in this role is contingent upon successful completion of CPI classes or other mandated Behavioral Management certification.
  • Ongoing employment in this role is contingent upon successful completion of First Aid training.
  • This role requires interaction both within and outside the organization to provide or obtain information and/or participant services. Normal courtesy, tact, and discretion are required.
