KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the guidance of the Shelter Manager or Program Supervisor, the Shelter Services Advocate is tasked with fostering an environment that empowers participants, enhances their well-being, and increases their capacity to live safely and independently. The Advocate's primary role is to ensure that participants' fundamental needs are met, including food, clothing, and shelter, while providing a safe and supportive atmosphere within the shelter program. The position emphasizes Trauma-Informed engagement and services, focusing on building healthy relationships to empower participants and facilitate their healing journey.
EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
- A high school diploma, supplemented by additional courses or specialized training at a business or community college, or other formal training programs. Must demonstrate the ability to understand and effectively carry out assigned responsibilities.
- Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of work experience in the domestic violence sector or with a related demographic group, particularly children. Two (2) years of experience is preferred. Experience working with adults and children affected by domestic violence or similar issues is required.
EXPERIENCE
- Experience of over one year, up to two years.
- Staff who do not meet the experience requirement must possess at least six (6) months of work experience in the domestic violence field or with a related demographic group and complete the following prior to independently providing direct services:
- Initial training
- 80 hours of shadowing a qualified staff member in the same role
- 40 hours of being shadowed by a qualified staff member in the same role
- Enhanced six (6) months training and close supervision plan submitted to the relevant authority within the first week of employment.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics and trauma-informed care is highly desirable. Ability to engage, empower, and communicate effectively, respectfully, and empathetically with survivors from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. Flexibility to work evenings, overnight, and weekends is essential. Must be capable of working independently with minimal supervision. On certain shifts, the Shelter Services Advocate may be the sole staff member on duty.
ADDITIONAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- A valid driver's license, a clear driving record, and the use of a personal vehicle for participant transportation as needed.
- This position is subject to a criminal background check, and continued employment is contingent upon a clear record.
- Successful completion of CPR, CPI, and/or van driving training is required to ensure the ability to perform essential job functions.
- Requires interaction both within and outside the organization to provide participant services. Normal courtesy, tact, and discretion are essential.
