Job Title: Addictions Counselor Assistant

Join the New York State Civil Service team as an Addictions Counselor Assistant and contribute to the delivery of high-quality addiction treatment services.

Job Summary:

The Addictions Counselor Assistant will work under the supervision of an Addiction Counselor to provide support and guidance to clients in a multidisciplinary treatment team setting. This role involves assisting with individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, treatment planning, and clinical activities.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with individual and group counseling sessions, providing support and guidance to clients.
  • Conduct crisis intervention and provide support to clients in crisis.
  • Assist in developing and implementing individual treatment plans, gathering information through direct observation and discussion with patients.
  • Coordinate care with referral sources, including admissions and discharges.
  • Complete required client and facility documentation, both electronic and paper.
  • Conduct and monitor recreational, vocational, and social activities as needed.
  • Assist with patient transportation, room searches, and urine toxicology collection.
  • Prepare room and client supplies for new admissions.
  • Conduct routine rounds and document observations.
  • May provide training or guidance to newer or sporadic peers.
  • May complete insurance calls and documentation regarding coordination of care.
  • Monitor clients and ensure building safety and security.
  • Participate in meal preparation and distribution.
  • Communicate shift change information to facilitate smooth transitions.
Requirements:

To be eligible for this role, you must have two years of experience, one year of which must have required the application of communication skills and one year must have been in a direct treatment capacity in an addictions treatment setting. Alternatively, you may have an associate's degree in a human services field or be a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC)-Trainee or CASAC-Provisional in New York.

Additional Information:

OASAS Addiction Treatment Centers (ATCs) are Tobacco-Free Facilities. Prospective appointees will be checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) and investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC). Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
