School of Medicine and Dentistry: Psychiatry

Salary Range or Pay Grade

$220,400 - $368,692 a year

Position Overview

The University of Rochester's Department of Psychiatry is actively seeking a dedicated physician to become a vital member of our dynamic primary care and hospitalist team within the Medicine in Psychiatry Division.

This full-time role is designed for board certified or board eligible Internists, Family Medicine Physicians, or Medicine-Pediatricians to function as an attending physician, addressing the medical needs of individuals with significant mental health challenges.

Responsibilities

The role encompasses two primary care components: involvement with the URMC Substance Strong Recovery and Addiction Services in Brighton (50%) and serving as a hospitalist within the Inpatient Medicine in Psychiatry Service units at Strong Memorial Hospital/URMC (50%).

Patients admitted to these units may present with severe mental health disorders and/or substance use issues alongside acute medical conditions.

Clinical duties will include delivering acute inpatient medical care to this unique patient demographic through a collaborative multidisciplinary team approach.

Academic and Professional Development

This position includes an academic appointment with the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, with rank determined by experience and achievements. Ample opportunities for faculty development are available within a strong mentorship framework.

The primary faculty appointments will be with the Department of Psychiatry, supplemented by a secondary appointment aligned with the physician's board certification (or eligibility).

We welcome applicants with clinical, leadership, and/or research expertise in healthcare disparities, integrated mental-physical health, geriatrics, and addiction medicine.

Teaching and Supervision

Teaching and clinical oversight of psychiatric residents, fellows, medical students, and other trainees is a fundamental aspect of this role, along with participation in process enhancement and program development initiatives.

For the inpatient responsibilities, physicians will be expected to work approximately 14 weeks throughout the year. In the outpatient setting, physicians will engage in half-day clinics, allowing sufficient time to manage patients' medical complexities with robust nursing support; call duties are manageable, occurring every 5 weeks.

Institutional Overview

As one of the leading academic medical centers in the nation, the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) serves as the cornerstone of the University's health research, education, patient care, and community outreach missions.

The healthcare delivery network is anchored by Strong Memorial Hospital, an 800-bed, University-owned teaching hospital recognized for its specialty programs consistently ranked among the nation's best.

At URMC, our extensive teaching and research initiatives enhance the patient experience through innovative ideas and scientifically grounded approaches.

Community and Compensation

The greater Rochester area, with a population exceeding one million, offers a variety of unique attractions and events year-round. Rochester has been recognized as one of America's Top Ten Most Livable Cities, noted for its family-friendly environment, educational opportunities, and affordable housing.

Compensation includes a competitive base salary, with opportunities for bonuses, loan forgiveness programs, annual CME allowances, and a comprehensive benefits package through the University.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid NYS physician license prior to commencement.
  • Must be board certified or board eligible in Internal or Family Medicine.
  • Must hold an active DEA registration.
