Position Overview:
The Tissue Processing Specialist is responsible for orienting and embedding various types of biological specimens in accordance with established embedding protocols and specific directives. This role involves preparing high-quality tissue sections by utilizing both automated and manual microtome techniques, ensuring adherence to laboratory standards.
The specialist will execute routine staining procedures using automated systems, employing appropriate control slides to demonstrate staining characteristics as outlined in laboratory guidelines.
Additionally, the role encompasses performing both manual and automated staining techniques, including histochemical, immunohistochemical, immunofluorescence, and in-situ hybridization, while following established laboratory protocols and utilizing control slides for quality assurance.
Maintaining laboratory equipment and facilities in compliance with operational policies is a key responsibility. The specialist will also conduct slide and stain reviews as part of the quality control process, ensuring that staining performance meets established standards before the specimens are released for interpretation.
Basic troubleshooting skills are essential, as the specialist must recognize when laboratory processes and equipment (such as embedders, microtomes, and processors) are not functioning optimally. The ability to independently resolve minor issues and escalate more complex problems is crucial.
Receiving, verifying, and accessioning specimens in accordance with departmental protocols is also part of the role. The specialist will process specimens for testing, interpretation, and, when necessary, submission to external laboratories.
Moreover, the Tissue Processing Specialist will support the laboratory in various functions within the scope of regulations, training, and practice, and actively participate in quality assurance initiatives.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent with a minimum of 1 year of experience in a histology role.
- HT/HTL ASCP Certification is required.
- Previous experience in a high-volume clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
Shift: Monday to Friday; no on-call or weekend obligations.
