Job Summary:

We are in the process of establishing a clinical research network with the goal of transforming clinical research in Africa. Our vision is to create a sustainable, African-led research ecosystem that promotes health equity and innovation. By developing a network of top-tier clinical research sites and capabilities, we aim to generate the necessary evidence to inform health decisions and policies in Africa while nurturing the next generation of African scientific leaders.

Africa currently represents only 2% of global clinical research, despite bearing 25% of the world's disease burden. While significant investments have been made in disease-specific clinical research sites and networks, these efforts have often resulted in fragmented infrastructure, limited capacity, and a reliance on expatriate leadership. Such models have struggled to ensure long-term sustainability or address the broader health needs of African nations beyond narrow therapeutic areas. Consequently, health products and policies in Africa frequently rely on data from other regions, which may not adequately reflect the rich diversity of African populations and local contexts. This lack of locally relevant evidence impedes the development of tailored health solutions that effectively address Africa's unique challenges and priorities.

Our clinical research network aims to change this landscape. By collaborating with leading institutions and trial units across the continent, we will establish a network of clinical research sites that serve two vital objectives: diversifying global research and empowering Africa to meet the healthcare needs of its rapidly growing population.

This network will be designed to catalyze Africa's self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical and vaccine research and development, ensuring the continent can lead its own health innovation agenda. We will create digital and clinical infrastructure while emphasizing deep community engagement to build trust, relevance, and impact.

At our sites, we will conduct rigorous and ethical research that centers on African populations and priorities. By generating high-quality local data that reflects the diversity of African contexts, we can expedite the development and delivery of tailored global health solutions—designed for Africa, by Africa. Our aim is to establish sustainable research capacity that endures beyond any single study or funding source, empowering African institutions to emerge as global leaders in clinical research and scientific innovation for generations to come.

Overview:

We are seeking a dynamic and seasoned Vice President of Technology (CTO) to join our Africa Clinical Research Network. This role is pivotal in formulating and executing a clear strategy for technology utilization within our organization, including software for clinical research. The CTO will spearhead digital transformation, oversee a team responsible for implementing digital infrastructure for the network, and lead efforts to leverage data insights for research and operational purposes.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy and Leadership:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive digital strategy and product roadmap.
  • Lead the design and execution of new digital infrastructure tailored to clinical research requirements, building on existing capabilities at partner clinical research sites.
  • Formulate budgets aligned with strategic priorities; monitor budget allocations and expenditures related to digital initiatives.

Technical Expertise:

  • Delve into technical details, including software selection, tooling, and data engineering/management strategies.
  • Assess and implement innovative digital technology solutions to enhance clinical research and operations.
  • Oversee the integration of new technologies to ensure alignment with business objectives.

Vendor and Stakeholder Management:

  • Manage relationships with technology vendors, driving initiatives and fostering strategic partnerships.
  • Conduct vendor negotiations to secure optimal tools and services for the organization.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure technology solutions meet organizational needs.
  • Stay informed about the latest technology developments in the clinical research ecosystem.

Team Management:

  • Build, manage, and mentor a team responsible for software implementation, digital infrastructure development, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Encourage a collaborative and innovative team environment.

Compliance and Security:

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience leading multi-country/multi-site healthcare digital infrastructure activities and possessing a strong technical understanding of clinical trial software are essential for this role.
