Position Title: Clinical Laboratory Specialist
General Overview:
The Clinical Laboratory Specialist plays a vital role in the healthcare setting by conducting precise analyses of patient samples and documenting the outcomes. This position requires strict adherence to the laboratory's quality assurance protocols, including comprehensive documentation of all quality control measures, instrument calibrations, and maintenance activities as per the laboratory's established policies and procedures. The specialist is responsible for executing complex tests under supervision, in compliance with regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts only those analyses authorized by the laboratory director.
- Adheres to the laboratory's protocols for specimen management, testing procedures, result reporting, and record-keeping.
- Maintains thorough records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are processed in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Complies with the laboratory's quality control standards, documenting all quality control activities and maintenance performed.
- Responds appropriately when test systems deviate from acceptable performance levels, following established laboratory procedures.
- Identifies and addresses issues that may negatively impact test performance or result reporting, escalating concerns to a supervisor or director as necessary.
- Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems do not meet established performance criteria.
- Utilizes professional judgment to evaluate specimen integrity, result accuracy, and inter-result validity, taking corrective actions as needed.
- Participates in proficiency testing, ensuring samples are treated with the same care as patient specimens.
- Conducts patient testing on specimens submitted for toxicology analysis using appropriate screening and LC/MS instrumentation.
- Follows all OSHA and Bloodborne Pathogen regulations.
- Engages in laboratory training initiatives.
- Employs knowledge, judgment, and problem-solving skills to maintain high-quality work standards.
- Communicates effectively with colleagues and laboratory clients, both verbally and in writing.
- Collaborates with team members in a professional manner.
- Reports directly to the General Laboratory Supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, physical sciences, or laboratory sciences.
- Meets all qualifications established by regulatory standards for high complexity testing.
- Holds ASCP, AAB, AMT, or equivalent certification.
