Job Overview:


The primary objective of this role is to deliver technical assistance in the care and breeding of small animal models utilized in the investigation of neurodegenerative disorders.

This position plays a vital role in ensuring that animals are bred appropriately to fulfill the experimental requirements of the research team, alongside overseeing animal care and husbandry tasks (including health assessments, cage maintenance, and other related procedures). Comprehensive training in animal handling and biosafety protocols will be provided. Availability for some weekends and holidays is necessary.

The individual in this role will be crucial in guaranteeing that daily animal health and husbandry tasks are executed effectively.


Key Responsibilities:
40% - Under the guidance of the supervisor, carry out essential animal health responsibilities in ABSL1, ABSL2, and/or ABSL2* environments, including daily welfare assessments, reporting health concerns, monitoring automatic watering systems, checking food supplies, changing animal housing as scheduled and as needed (for cleanliness), accurately identifying rodent genders, maintaining rodent colonies, managing breeding pairs, collecting tissue samples for genotyping, performing aseptic micro-tattooing, culling animals to maintain optimal cage populations, and conducting regular cleaning duties.

Observing animal behavior and appearance, reporting any notable changes to the appropriate personnel, and performing additional tasks as required, including monitoring environmental conditions to ensure they remain within established parameters, and maintaining effective communication with all team members.
25% - Assess animals for health issues and perform humane euthanasia when necessary or as assigned, ensuring that housing environments meet predetermined standards, including monitoring post-surgical animals and notifying relevant personnel of their health status.
Utilize electronic databases for precise record-keeping (births, animal status, health observations, work assignments, etc.).
15% - Execute record-keeping tasks (such as temperature and humidity logs, facility maintenance records, equipment inventories, creating animal ID numbers, mating and housing documentation, recording births, and updating animal statuses).

10% - Provide assistance to other teams as required, which may include routine facility maintenance tasks, various cleaning duties as scheduled by the supervisor, laundry, and maintaining common areas.
5% - Participate in regular bi-weekly meetings with management to discuss colony size, optimization, and experimental requests.
5% - Undertake other organizational, coordination, and administrative tasks as directed by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma, completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), and one year of experience in animal care; or a high school diploma with two years of relevant animal care experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, along with the knowledge and skills essential for successful performance in this role.

Ability to collaborate effectively with team members in a fast-paced, dynamic, and physically demanding environment.
Ability to adhere to Standard Operating Procedures related to Environmental Health and Safety (including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment).

Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with biomedical research and animal models of disease.
Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification.
Valid California Driver's License.
