Position Overview:


Under the supervision of a Principal, the Special Education Support Assistant collaborates with a certified Resource Specialist Teacher to facilitate educational instruction for individuals or small groups. This role involves monitoring and documenting student progress in terms of behavior and academic performance, as well as executing various clerical tasks as needed.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualized or small group tutoring to reinforce lessons as directed by the educator.
  • Assist the teacher in organizing workspaces, displays, and educational materials.
  • Operate audiovisual and educational training equipment, and manage the distribution and collection of classroom supplies.
  • Observe and report on student performance and behavior to ensure effective learning environments.
  • Facilitate group activities as assigned by the teacher.
  • Collaborate with educators to adapt programs and materials to meet diverse student needs.
  • Ensure student health and safety by adhering to established practices and regulations.
  • Support students through positive examples, emotional encouragement, and general guidance.
  • Perform routine clerical tasks to assist classroom operations, including duplicating and organizing instructional materials.
  • Help administer assessments in accordance with established protocols.
  • Engage in meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities as required.
  • Carry out additional related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficient in oral and written English communication.
  • Familiarity with basic educational subjects, including mathematics, language arts, and reading.
  • Understanding of safe practices in classroom settings.
  • Strong interpersonal skills characterized by tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Basic record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, and the community.
  • Capable of performing routine clerical tasks such as filing and duplicating.
  • Legible printing and writing skills.
  • Basic arithmetic skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Able to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Willingness to learn the procedures and limitations of assigned responsibilities.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Skilled in observing, monitoring, and reporting on student behavior.
  • Proficient in operating instructional and duplicating equipment.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and six months of experience working with children in a structured environment. Completion of 48 college units or graduation from an accredited college or university is preferred.

Working Environment:
Classroom setting.

- Transcripts demonstrating 48 semester units from an accredited college/university (or CODESP)
- High School Diploma or GED
- Two letters of recommendation (dated within the past year)
