Corrections Officer/Court Security Specialist

Job Summary:

San Juan County, WA is seeking a highly skilled Corrections Officer/Court Security Specialist to maintain courthouse and jail security while performing inmate care and custody duties. This role requires strong leadership skills, ability to organize and direct groups of people, and instruct others in the use of simple hand and power tools.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform duties as a limited commissioned officer, including receiving, searching, booking, fingerprinting, and photographing incoming prisoners.
  • Classify and house prisoners, prepare and escort prisoners for court, and monitor prisoners in court.
  • Prepare food for service and feed prisoners, maintain sanitary standards, and monitor prisoner well-being.
  • Conduct periodic cell searches, write reports documenting incidents, and place items into evidence.
  • Transport prisoners safely and securely, and restrain and control violent prisoners.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED with two years of college coursework/training in supervision, psychology, and/or social work.
  • Strong oral, writing, and leadership skills, with ability to organize and direct groups of people.
  • Successful completion of the Corrections Officer Academy sponsored by the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission within six months of employment.
  • Certification to use firearms and tasers, and CPR/first aid certification.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record.

Working Conditions:

This role requires an element of personal risk and the responsibility of using physical force, up to and including deadly force. The incumbent will work with prisoners who may be physically and/or verbally abusive, and will be required to travel frequently by airplane, ferry, and small boat.
