Position Overview: The Respiratory Therapist at Advocate Sherman Hospital plays a crucial role in delivering and coordinating extensive respiratory care. This position involves administering respiratory care procedures and modalities in accordance with established standards, policies, and protocols. By employing evidence-based practices and effective communication, the therapist contributes to ensuring a safe patient environment and an optimal patient experience.

Key Responsibilities:


• Conduct assessments of patients utilizing various skills, including pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiographs, hemodynamic values, and laboratory results.

• Operate specialized ventilators in both critical and non-critical care environments. Assist physicians with bedside procedures as necessary.

• Administer medication treatments and therapies as per physician orders and/or patient-driven respiratory protocols.

• Educate and instruct patients regarding the purpose, techniques, self-care, goals of therapy, and disease management.

• Facilitate clinical problem-solving and collaborate with other departments for effective patient management.

• Exhibit strong communication, feedback, and conflict resolution skills.

Licensing and Certification Requirements:


• Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license issued by the respective state.

• Active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) within 12 months OR active Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential issued by the NBRC if received before January 1, 2019.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).

Educational Background:


• Completion of an accredited respiratory care program, with a minimum of an associate degree.

Experience Requirements:


• No prior experience is necessary.

• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

• Effective decision-making abilities for patient care and equipment utilization.

• Proficiency in computer skills, including e-mail and electronic medical record systems.

• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), along with strong listening and interpersonal abilities.

• Ability to establish rapport and positive relationships with patients, team members, and physicians.

• Exceptional time management skills, with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and work collaboratively.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:


• Operate all necessary equipment.

• Capable of performing various physical tasks and lifts according to established guidelines.

• Consistently demonstrate safe body mechanics.
