Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at Cook County Health and Hospitals. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a critical role in providing technical support to our ophthalmologists and medical staff, ensuring the highest level of patient care and satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect and review patient medical history, determining the urgency of their condition and initiating appropriate care as necessary
  • Document collected information into the electronic medical record
  • Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes to prepare patients for testing
  • Perform accurate and consistent patient care testing, including applanation tonometry, refractometry, and corneal topography
  • Record data results of patient care testing to identify and support the need for specialized care
  • Provide educational literature and instructions to patients regarding eye care recommendations
  • Design and implement care plans, as directed by ophthalmologists and medical staff
  • Check and adjust equipment calibration, prepare necessary equipment and supplies for exams and procedures, and maintain inventory of medical and surgical supplies
  • Train staff by providing technical consultation and guidance to ensure accurate handling and operation of equipment
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA compliance standards
  • Attend mandatory training sessions and department meetings, and assume responsibility for maintaining necessary licensure and certification
Requirements
  • Current and valid certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
  • Two years of work experience performing ophthalmic services
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as an Ophthalmic Technician
  • Bilingual
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ophthalmic technician skills, including standard and surgical ophthalmic equipment and supplies
  • Knowledge of procedures and regulations specific to patient assessment and care
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate with diverse cultures and age groups
  • Strong customer service and empathy skills, with the ability to prioritize, plan, and organize projects and tasks
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure in challenging situations
