Job Summary

Shoreline Community College is seeking qualified English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors to join our faculty pool. As a part-time faculty member, you will teach courses in all skill areas (reading, writing, listening, speaking, etc.) and levels (from basic literacy skills to academic and pre-college English) within the ESL program.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and teach ESL courses using your own materials and/or published texts
  • Assess student skills and assign grades
  • Communicate with administrators and other faculty members
  • Follow program procedures
Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language or a closely related field with coursework in language teaching methodology and language acquisition theories
  • Experience teaching and supporting students in a dynamic, diverse, and multifaceted classroom environment
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs, learning management systems, and other appropriate instructional technologies
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to impart excitement and enthusiasm into the instruction of English as a Second Language
  • Experience with or willingness to gain experience with teaching and developing coursework online, and demonstrated experience applying equity and accessibility to online language learning
  • Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness
  • Effective oral/written communication with individuals at all levels inside and outside the College
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of teaching situations including classes comprised of beginning level refugees and immigrants, younger international students at a variety of levels or older resident students preparing for workforce training programs
  • Experience developing course content and assessment tools for ESL in multiple modalities, using the latest research findings and educational techniques
  • Experience developing/modifying curriculum both collaboratively and independently
  • Experience working and interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Knowledge of current theories and research in language acquisition, teaching/learning styles, collaborative learning, assessment, and multicultural education
  • Experience advising and teaching students from diverse academic backgrounds and with different goals, such as learning English for employment purposes, earning a professional/technical degree or certificate, or earning an Associate's degree for transfer to a four-year university
Working Conditions

The College is currently in mixed (both in-person and online instruction) operations, with the option for some assignments to be completed in a fully online environment based on program or area needs. For remote (online) instruction, faculty will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. For on-campus in-person instruction, work is usually performed in a classroom/office space that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time.

Salary and Benefits

This is a part-time, non-tenured, quarter-to-quarter assignment. Salary is dependent upon the number of contact hours for this assignment as provided in the agreement with the Shoreline Community College Federation of Teachers. Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.
