Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Animal Care Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of all dogs at the shelter. Under the guidance of the Director of Animal Care, the specialist is tasked with maintaining cleanliness in the kennels and providing essential feeding, socialization, and care for the dogs. Duties may shift based on the shelter's needs, and all staff members are expected to maintain a positive and professional demeanor at all times.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Feed, clean, walk, and socialize the dogs following established protocols.
  • Conduct thorough cleaning and disinfection of all shelter areas as needed.
  • Monitor the health and behavior of the animals, reporting any signs of illness, injury, or abnormal behavior to the medical team promptly.
  • Handle and restrain animals as necessary, especially those that are difficult to control.
  • Assist in the release of animals to their owners as instructed by the front desk staff or shelter management.
  • Support daily shelter operations, which may include unpacking and organizing supplies, laundry, dishwashing, waste disposal, and general cleaning of all shelter and outdoor areas.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma and necessary certifications.
  • Understanding of basic animal behavior and effective restraint techniques.
  • Familiarity with cleaning and disinfecting practices, as well as the proper use of cleaning tools and materials.
  • Ability to identify signs of distress in animals.
  • Willingness to work in environments where exposure to bites, scratches, contagious diseases, and animal waste may occur.
  • Availability to work on weekends and holidays.

Work Schedule: This position can be part-time or full-time, with the expectation of weekend and holiday shifts. Full-time roles come with benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, as well as paid time off and holidays after a specified period of employment.
