CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief Medical Officer is the designated Physician and health authority as per national standards. This role entails providing overall oversight for clinical services at the facility, ensuring the delivery of necessary medical care both on-site and off-site, without additional managerial duties.

CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduation from an accredited medical school.
  • Full licensure to practice in the state of employment.
  • Current DEA Registration.
  • Preferred Board Certification.
  • Fluency in English, including reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension.
  • A collaborative team player who exemplifies teamwork.
  • Able to make independent decisions when necessary.
  • Skilled in tactfully interacting with personnel, families, visitors, and government representatives.
  • Possess leadership and supervisory skills, fostering a harmonious work environment.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others in the workplace.
  • Experience in sub-acute inpatient care and hospitalist practice is essential.

CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Consult with community medical providers to address service delivery issues.
  • Supervise clinical services provided by professional and support staff.
  • Ensure availability of on-call services.
  • Review and approve clinical protocols, policies, and medical disaster plans annually.
  • Manage referrals to external healthcare facilities, ensuring quality and continuity of care.
  • Sponsor Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners in accordance with state regulations for correctional facilities.
  • Act as a resource for all staff Physicians and clinical personnel at the facility.
  • Assist in the recruitment and evaluation of healthcare providers.
  • Participate in training and development sessions.
  • Represent the healthcare program in discussions with local organizations or officials as needed.
  • Attend required medical and clinical meetings.
  • Conduct sick call, chronic care, and infirmary care as necessary.
  • Document all patient interactions in medical records accurately.
  • Ensure all documentation is timely, legible, and properly signed.
  • Ensure verbal or telephone orders are countersigned as required.
  • Adhere to the approved formulary for therapeutic regimens.
  • Review non-formulary requests for proper documentation.
  • Utilize in-house resources for treatment before considering off-site referrals.
  • Provide emergency treatment on-site and respond effectively in urgent situations.
  • Redefine industry benchmarks through core values, partnerships, effective clinical practices, and innovative healthcare strategies.
  • Maintain competence in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and AED use.
  • Follow evidence-based medical care standards in compliance with existing policies and procedures.
