Job Overview:

General Overview:
Operates under the administrative oversight of the shift supervisor or manager to deliver essential services to patients.

In alignment with the clinical guidance of the Physician, gathers and communicates vital information to the physician and licensed nurse regarding the health condition of patients.

The Aerial Emergency Medical Technician will work collaboratively as part of a team, providing care and transport to all patients served by OU Health.

The Technician is responsible for ensuring the readiness of equipment, availability of supplies, and completing necessary documentation.

In addition to patient care in the pre-hospital setting, the aerial technician will engage in care delivery at OU Health during non-transport periods.

The Aerial Emergency Medical Technician will support care delivery in various units, including NICU, PICU, Pediatric ED, or any other relevant area, with the primary responsibility being transport, ensuring availability to depart the facility within designated timelines.

Outreach initiatives are also a key component of the Aerial Emergency Medical Technician role, which may encompass educating regional providers, engaging in public relations activities, and participating in quality improvement efforts.

Core Responsibilities:
The responsibilities outlined in this section are fundamental to the position. Inability to perform these duties with or without accommodation may lead to disqualification from the role. (Required) Collaborates with the patient's healthcare team to execute treatment plans. Administers NRP/BLS/ACLS/PALS in accordance with established guidelines or medical direction.
Ensures timely and accurate documentation of care provided.
Facilitates inter-facility and intra-facility patient transfers while attending to the personal needs of patients and families during each transport.
Acts as a professional representative of the OU Health Transport Program on every shift.
Maintains and ensures the operational readiness of OU Health ambulances, transport equipment, and supplies on a shift basis.
Conducts assessments and vital signs as directed.

Delivers patient care, including vascular access insertion and airway management. Contributes to the licensed nurse's efforts in developing and modifying the patient's care plan.

Assists the licensed nurse in delivering and documenting care provided to the patient.
Ensures patient safety.

Responsible for responding to transport requests utilizing all OU Health ground and air vehicles, along with record keeping, data entry, and clerical support as assigned.

Engages in the ongoing development of the OU Health transport program by attending and participating in meetings, in-services, committees, outreach efforts, and completing assigned projects.

Operates ground ambulances in compliance with applicable regulations and statutes.

Ensures patient safety and acts as a safety officer during patient movement from loading onto the stretcher/isolette until offloading at the receiving facility.

Completes and documents safety inspections of OU Health ambulances at the start of each shift.
Stocks and maintains vehicles and their contents in a state of readiness at all times. Maintains the facility and its contents, documenting the same.
Participates in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement programs as assigned.

General Duties:

Education:
High school diploma or GED required. Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience:


Three (3) years of relevant experience (4000 hours) as a paramedic in a role providing Advanced Life Support required. Experience in acute care/emergency settings with pediatric patients is preferred.

Licensure and Certifications:
National Registry of Paramedics Certification required. Current license issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Health as a Paramedic required. Valid Oklahoma Driver's License required. BLS

  • Basic Life Support required upon hire.
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support required within six months of hire.
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support required within six months of hire.
  • NRP certifications required within six months of hire.
  • Advanced certification specializing in Neonatal and Pediatric Transport obtained within 24 months of hire.
Advanced certification specializing in Flight obtained within 24 months of hire.Emergency Vehicle Operators Course required, with orientation and refresher every three years thereafter.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity with basic hospital policies and procedures.
Understanding of medical terminology. Knowledge of office procedures and equipment.
Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Proficient typing skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, emphasizing customer service to both internal and external customers.
Competent computer skills with familiarity and/or ability to learn Microsoft Office, Teletracking, and other software applications.
Knowledge of commonly used hospital-based computer programs is advantageous.
Ability to accurately utilize prehospital patient charting software. Ability to relay information accurately and concisely. Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple disciplines in the healthcare environment. Ability to manage multiple tasks successfully.
