General Overview

The role involves executing a range of routine and advanced tests across one or more laboratory divisions. The individual must possess comprehensive knowledge of laboratory functions, including the theoretical foundations of testing procedures and relevant policies.

Authorized by the laboratory director, the professional will conduct testing (and result reporting*) in the clinical laboratory where they have demonstrated competence.

Operates with minimal oversight for specimen handling, test execution, and result documentation.
Key Responsibilities

  • Introduce oneself when engaging with patients, families, visitors, or colleagues.
  • Complete routine and urgent testing within set guidelines, ensuring accurate results. Make informed judgments regarding the validity of test outcomes based on quality control data and patient conditions.
  • Adapt to increased workloads during peak periods while maintaining result quality.
  • Conduct tests independently, showcasing a solid understanding of departmental protocols and theoretical testing principles.
  • Maintain thorough and precise logs or documentation, including quality control records, as required by section protocols.
  • Utilize autoverification and related technologies to release validated results. Confirm non-autoverified results prior to release and consult with supervisors when necessary.
  • Identify critical values and reportable results in accordance with established protocols.
  • Communicate critical results appropriately to authorized healthcare providers and document this action in the laboratory information system.
  • Report and document quality assurance incidents to the section supervisor and the Laboratory's Quality Manager.
  • Understand and perform necessary information system functions for laboratory operations.
  • Exhibit creative problem-solving skills and know when to seek appropriate guidance.
  • Familiarity with the Laboratory Exposure Control Plan, including the Chemical Hygiene Plan, Hazard Communication Program, and OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen standards, and apply standard precautions in work practices while effectively managing chemical or biological spills.
  • Demonstrate safe practices in the execution of assigned duties.
  • Report any unsafe practices or conditions to the appropriate responsible parties.
Education, Training, and Experience

An Associate's Degree is required; a Bachelor's degree with MLS or MT is preferred. Certifications, education, and/or experience must meet CLIA standards for moderate and high complexity testing. Experience with instrumentation is preferred.
Licensure/Certification

MLS(ASCP), MT (ASCP), MLT (ASCP), MT(HEW) certification must be obtained within one year of hire.
