POSITION SUMMARY
The Excavation Operations Supervisor oversees and evaluates all facets of excavation projects, focusing on critical areas such as safety protocols, land clearing, excavation processes, soil stabilization, drainage systems, pipe laying, base construction, grading, and paving activities. This role involves assigning tasks and machinery, managing schedules, ordering necessary materials, and providing comprehensive project updates to ensure adherence to timelines and budget constraints. The supervisor is also responsible for training personnel on safe equipment usage and work practices, ensuring compliance with both company safety standards and regulatory requirements set forth by OSHA and MSHA.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee and assess all project aspects, emphasizing safety, land clearing, excavation, soil stabilization, drainage, pipe laying, base construction, grading, and paving.
- Plan, allocate equipment, and supervise laborers and equipment operators, including subcontractors.
- Conduct safety inspections across all work areas, addressing any unsafe practices or conditions promptly.
- Interpret construction plans and specifications, ensuring compliance with project timelines and budgetary limits.
- Uphold adherence to company policies as well as OSHA and MSHA regulations.
- Educate employees on the safe operation of construction machinery, tools, and job techniques.
- Inspect and ensure equipment is maintained in optimal working condition.
- Document and report employee and equipment time to the Administrative Assistant.
- Provide daily updates on inventory and project advancements.
- Review vehicle condition reports and communicate any repair needs to the Maintenance Department.
- Travel to various job sites as necessary.
- Calculate job costs and manage projects within financial guidelines.
- Conduct annual performance evaluations for employees.
- Operate machinery as required.
- Collaborate with management and Human Resources regarding disciplinary actions.
- Maintain professionalism in interactions with clients, contractors, suppliers, and colleagues.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of five years of experience in operating heavy machinery.
- At least one year of supervisory experience.
- Proficient in mass excavation, drainage, base placement, and grading.
- Knowledgeable in soil stabilization, paving standards, and pipe installation.
- Ability to interpret project layouts and staking.
- Skilled in reading and understanding construction plans and drawings.
- Strong leadership and training capabilities.
- Proficient in personal computer usage.
- Understanding of proper equipment utilization.
- Comprehensive knowledge of construction equipment mechanics.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Demonstrated strong work ethic.
- Reliable transportation required.
- Willingness to work weekends and holidays as needed.
- Flexibility to work varying shifts based on production demands.
PREFERRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with GPS-equipped machinery.
- Ability to survey and layout construction projects.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- MSHA certification.
LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Valid Class C driver's license.
- Safe driving record for the past three years.
