Pathology Grossing Specialist

As a skilled Grossing Technician, you will play a critical role in the accurate description, dissection, and processing of biopsies, margins, and tissue specimens in our Histology department. You will work closely with our Pathologists to ensure the highest quality results and contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Key Responsibilities:- Perform all technical aspects of grossing and dictating tissue specimens using various laboratory materials and equipment under the direct supervision of a Pathologist or Lab Supervisor.
- Ensure specimen integrity upon arrival and throughout the entire process.
- Dictate a detailed gross description for each specimen, including anatomical site, size, color, weight, dimensions, count, volume, cut techniques, abnormal findings, and dissects and prepares tissue for cassettes.
- Escalate non-routine complicated specimens to the Pathologist.
- Maintain accurate work records and ensure compliance with laboratory policies and procedures.
- Prepare dissected tissue specimens and place them into cassettes.
- Load prepared cassettes into Tissue Processors and start the processor.
- Assist with H&E stains, including special and immunohistochemistry stains, as requested by a Pathologist or Supervisor.
- Perform Quality Control and Quality Assurance Procedures.
- May label requisitions, specimen containers, and cassettes.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and track all routine maintenance and quality controls performed.
- File, retrieve, and distribute blocks, slides, and pathology reports.
- Operate, clean, and sterilize laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments, and workstations.
- Dispose of hazardous chemical wastes per regulatory guidelines.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all State, Federal, professional regulations, as well as company and departmental rules, policies, and procedural manuals.
- Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution or equivalent under the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines of high complexity testing.
- OR Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, with 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
- State licensure, if applicable.
- 1 year of practical laboratory experience preferred.
- Computers, computer programs, information systems, forceps, rulers, tissue dyes, scalpel or razor blades, tissue processors, IHC Stainer, and personal protective equipment.
- Knowledge of CLIA regulations regarding proficiency testing, quality assurance, and quality control.
- Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures, equipment, and testing to monitor control checks.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Skill in gross dissection.
- Skill in using computer programs and applications.
- Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests and operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
- Ability to listen, read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.
- Physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger; handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to focus.
