About the Role

The Certified Surgical Assistant (SA-C) / Certified First Assistant (CST/CFA) performs First Assist responsibilities in accordance with the Association of Surgical Technology (AST) or the American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA) and functions as a member of the surgical team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assists with positioning, prepping, and draping.
  • Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and other means as directed by the surgeon.
  • Provides exposure through appropriate use of retractors, instruments, suction, and sponging techniques.
  • Handles tissue as directed by the surgeon.
  • Suture fascia, subcutaneous tissue, and skin as directed by the surgeon.
  • Place and suture drains as directed by the surgeon.
  • Assist with removal of sutures and staples.
  • Assist with circulating nurse duties under direction of R.N.
  • Apply surgical dressings.
  • Maintain aseptic technique/environment.
  • Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy and physiology and operative technique to operative procedure.
  • Perform other duties under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
Requirements
  • Licensure or other certifications: Certified Surgical Technologist or Surgical Assistant with successful completion of first assist course accredited by the ABSA or AST.
  • Educational Requirements: High School Diploma or GED. Must meet and fulfill the SA-C or CST/CFA job description qualifications and competencies.
  • Minimum Experience: Two (2) years First Assistant/Surgical Tech Experience. Proficient as First Assistant and scrub.
  • Preferred Experience: Previous experience in CVOR strongly preferred.
