Available shifts include day or evening; Inpatient pharmacy technician roles are available; Alternative work schedules can be accommodated.

As a Pharmacy Technician at Covenant Health, you will engage in a variety of rewarding opportunities to deliver exceptional service. You will utilize advanced automated systems such as pharmacy carousels and automated dispensing units. Some roles involve working in the IV room, where you will prepare IVs and chemotherapy for patients. Other available positions include pharmacy procurement specialists, automation experts, narcotic monitoring, surgical satellite pharmacy, and medication reconciliation specialists.

Job Summary:

Under the direct oversight of a licensed pharmacist, you will execute tasks related to the dispensing of chemotherapy medications. Your technical responsibilities will encompass proficiency in IV processes, problem-solving capabilities, compounding hazardous medications, and participation in quality enhancement initiatives. Strong leadership skills are essential, including effective written and verbal communication that aligns with departmental goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fulfill all responsibilities and performance standards for both level I and level II technicians.
  • Support the pharmacist in training technicians at levels I and II.
  • Initiate and coordinate improvement projects as necessary.
  • Assist in launching new initiatives, including the formulation of policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in addressing the specific needs of the oncology patient population.
  • Accurately perform calculations for the preparation, compounding, and dispensing of chemotherapy medications.
  • Collaborate with pharmacists in preparing compounds, chemotherapy, and intravenous medications based on physician orders.
  • Manage pharmaceutical inventory, including stocking and overseeing chemotherapy medications and supplies; reconcile invoices as needed.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and safety of biological safety cabinets through daily cleaning and decontamination.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of clean rooms by conducting monthly air and surface testing for microbial surveillance. Understand the gauges used to monitor air pressure in negative pressure rooms, positive pressure rooms, and ante rooms, and take appropriate action if readings fall outside acceptable limits.
  • Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately when preparing chemotherapy agents.
  • Adhere to guidelines for the safe handling of hazardous waste.
  • Maintain the Investigational Drug supply in strict compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Follow established policies, procedures, and safety protocols. Complete required educational assignments annually. Work towards achieving departmental goals and participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: No specific educational requirements; however, sufficient education to meet the standards for the required license and/or certification is necessary.

Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of experience in the storage, handling, and disposal of chemotherapy drugs, or two (2) years of experience with state-approved certification. Experience in IV and chemotherapy compounding is preferred.

Licensure: The Tennessee Board of Pharmacy mandates that newly hired probationary employees obtain their license within the first 90 days of employment and maintain active status thereafter.
