Job Summary

The Central Service Technician II is a certified professional responsible for ensuring the proper inventory, decontamination, assembly, inspection, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment in a quality and timely manner.

Key Responsibilities
  • Understand and adhere to hospital performance standards, policies, and behaviors.
  • Demonstrate and articulate an understanding of the position's responsibilities.
  • Verbalize and apply knowledge of current department and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Attend staff meetings to update knowledge on current department and hospital issues.
  • Complete annual department and hospital competency requirements and document appropriately.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures, including dress code, code of conduct, customer service, attendance, and submission of annual physical.
  • Identify and use appropriate methods and solutions to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse, and disinfect instruments and clinical equipment.
  • Maintain proper functioning of sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaners, and instrument decontamination washers, and perform inspections of the same.
  • Consistently use recipes to correctly assemble, protect, wrap, containerize, and/or peel package and label instruments.
  • Properly handle and store sterile supplies, equipment, and instruments.
  • Select appropriate sterilization methods, know and follow correct principles of sterilization, and properly document and verify sterilization loads and biological tests to determine the efficacy of the sterilization process.
  • Retrieve, disburse, and track medical and surgical supplies and equipment to the customer in a quality and timely manner.
  • Know, use, maintain, and operate equipment specific to Central Processing, including steam sterilizers, cart washers, washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners, and heat sealers, as well as various testing devices.
  • Know and use processes involved in ordering, receiving, stocking, rotating, delivering, and monitoring usage of surgical supplies, and communicate supply issues to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area, complete assigned housekeeping duties, and serve as a resource to customers on all Central Processing functions.
  • Perform other related job duties as required, track progress and compliance in regards to training, staff meetings, and in-service education, and distribute medical supplies and restock supplies by rotating stock.
  • Transport patients to and from the Operating Room and Post Anesthesia Care Unit, clean and maintain work area, including shelves, in an orderly fashion, and apply knowledge of current methods of infection control.
  • Complete 10 Continuing Education Credits (CECs) annually and submit supporting documentation to Manager and Human Resources as required by NYS Law.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must be certified as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Central Supply Processing Department Technician (CSPDT) or grandfathered.
  • Previous Central Supply or Operating Room instrument processing experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical technology preferred.
