Qualifications:
License and Certification:
A valid Paraprofessional Educator certificate from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) is required.
Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent is necessary, along with successful completion of the Praxis Parapro Assessment or the GACE Parapro Assessment. Alternatively, 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours from an accredited institution are acceptable.
Experience:
Previous experience in a licensed childcare setting is preferred.
Skills:
Proficiency in child development principles; familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite; strong interpersonal skills; knowledge of office and media equipment; and the ability to represent Gwinnett County Public Schools effectively.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide assistance to the instructional program within a designated classroom, focusing on the supervision, care, and education of students with special needs. Responsibilities include:
1. Modifying classroom activities and materials under the guidance of the supervising teacher to support IEP goals and ensure participation of all special education students.
2. Delivering immediate first aid and medical assistance as directed by healthcare professionals to address urgent health needs.
3. Assisting in the administration of tests, homework, and make-up assignments to support classroom instruction.
4. Aiding medically fragile or physically disabled students in maintaining personal hygiene.
5. Supporting students with disabilities in daily activities such as grooming and community access as directed by the teacher.
6. Regularly conferring with teachers to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives.
7. Collecting data and implementing behavioral plans under the supervision of the assigned teacher to reinforce learning.
8. Monitoring special education students in various settings to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
9. Performing record-keeping and support functions to assist the teacher in maintaining necessary documentation.
10. Providing instruction to students in individual and group settings under the supervision of the assigned teacher to reinforce educational objectives.
11. Responding to emergency situations to address immediate safety concerns, including physical de-escalation procedures as needed.
12. Assisting with monitoring duties in various school areas to ensure appropriate student conduct.
13. Performing additional duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
The role involves frequent sitting for extended periods, along with the need to talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may need to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and engage in significant physical activities such as carrying, pushing, and pulling. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
