Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Station Manager to lead our agricultural operations in the research and development of vegetable seeds. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing crop management, planning and strategy, and station and organizational development and improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage crop management during all crop cycle steps, from planting to harvesting, ensuring the execution of research and breeding programs protocols to meet required expectations.
  • Responsible for successful crop management in all locations, including open field, cages, and greenhouses on the research station and in local isolation trials.
  • Ensure that appropriate phytosanitary precautions related to seed and plant health are always taken following globally harmonized guidelines.
  • Measure and monitor key performance metrics related to both the quality and productivity of crop programs.
  • Oversee and perform routine farm and field equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Remains abreast with scientific and technological developments and monitor external activities for continuous improvement in the region.
  • Assist in the development of annual operating budgets and capital investment plans.
  • Support senior leadership with resource management and budget strategy.
  • Responsible for the execution of activities within the OPEX limits set, warning and proposing corrective actions to management before any significant variation.
  • Propose a CAPEX plan and ensure the execution of the plan once approved.
  • Lead the organization/delegation of day-to-day priorities of the site to include pre-season logistical trial planning, safety, and compliance adherence in accordance with local and federal guidelines.
  • Prepare monthly written progress reports for the Regional Management Team.
  • Ensure labor needs and work with others to achieve desired outcomes in an efficient and productive manner.
  • Conduct periodic crop walks with, Breeders, Support and Operations to review crop progress and develop plans to address any variances or opportunities.
  • Actively Participate in regional and global initiatives to develop and expand the adoption of best farming practices.
  • Be solution-oriented and able to take an ambiguous idea and formulate sound decision-making by using business rational and data.
  • Stay organized while pivoting and refining strategies as priorities evolve and change over time.
  • Ensure the vision, goals, and culture of the company are demonstrated to the workers and influence an adoption of the culture.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement through the implementation of unique and innovative technology solutions designed to improve research design and operations success using new tools and methodologies to improve overall plant breeding phenotyping such as use of geospatial systems, agronomic planting and harvesting tools.
  • Organize weekly staff meetings to share progress and discuss opportunities for improvement the station.
  • Develop and sustain a community engagement program/plan for the station, including but not limited to community volunteer efforts and sustainability activities serving as a representative to external parties in partnership with other functions.
  • Actively support the station Illness and Injury Prevention Plan - assist in periodic safety training.
  • Supervise full-time and seasonal/contract farm labor associated with crop and trial management requirements.
  • Lead, develop, and manage all aspects within a station to successfully deliver and develop our breeding activities pipeline.
  • Ability to independently map organizational needs and identify talents.
  • In coordination with Human Resources, duties also include station recruitment support, new hire onboarding and orientation, site-specific training, and employee relations.
  • Partner with the R&D HR Business Partner to support people operations, provide training and development opportunities for all staff members, and ensure that critical conversations, coaching, and development planning are happening at the site.
  • Serve as a coach/reference for other R&D Site Managers within the region.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy with preference for Vegetables and Flowers studies.
  • 10+ years of experience in a similar position.
  • Master's degree with 5 years of experience.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred, French is a plus.
