Job Summary:

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is seeking a highly skilled Data Analyst to join its team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and analyzing environmental data, with a primary focus on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and associated water quality data.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the transfer and reporting of certain PFAS data with the Virginia Department of Health (VDH)
  • Compile and inventory potential PFAS sources from available local, state, and federal data
  • Develop and maintain water quality monitoring data analytic tools, applications, templates, and other related information projects as needed
  • Present data in a manner that facilitates data comprehension by technical and non-technical audiences
  • Review technical documents for consistency with regulatory requirements, PFAS analytical methods, and sound science

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of environmental science and policy, biology, water quality standards/criteria, aquatic ecology of freshwater and estuarine systems
  • Experience with data analytics, statistics, database management, and GIS in water quality or water resources applications
  • Ability to work as a team member and maintain good working relationships with DEQ colleagues and other federal, state, and local water quality programs
  • Ability to express ideas and concepts clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and/or program needs with competing timelines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with RStudio and R Shiny, Tableau, ESRI Products, SQL, or other related programming languages
  • Experience working with water quality data entailing large datasets, including QA/QC, analysis, and developing data visualization products

Additional Considerations:

  • Education, experience, or training in environmental sciences and policy, aquatic ecology, biology, natural sciences, environmental engineering, or related fields
  • Experience in water quality monitoring data management
