Job Overview

We are seeking a qualified Crisis Counselor to join our Emergency Services team. This role is pivotal in providing immediate support and meets all certification requirements set forth by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) for conducting hospital pre-admission screenings for both voluntary and involuntary admissions in compliance with state regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct assessments to evaluate imminent risks associated with mental health issues or co-occurring disorders, including potential harm to self or others.
  • Perform diagnostic evaluations for individuals in crisis, assessing mental status, risk factors, and current functioning.
  • Collaborate effectively with agency and community professionals to ensure appropriate crisis management and triage.
  • Complete additional tasks as required by the department.
Work Schedule

On-call availability during evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

Essential Skills and Qualifications
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant Virginia statutory provisions regarding confidentiality and hospitalization procedures.
  • Proficient in documenting assessments and service activities, including health records and correspondence.
  • Expertise in assessing and diagnosing acute mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and intellectual disabilities.
  • Familiarity with risk assessment criteria and the duty to warn protocols.
  • A minimum of one year of clinical experience with individuals facing serious mental health or substance use challenges is required.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in a human services field is required.
  • Certification as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP A/C) is essential.
  • A Master's Degree in a human services field is preferred.
  • Eligibility for licensure as a Resident in Counseling or Marriage & Family is preferred.
  • Possession of a DBHDS Preadmission Screening Certificate is advantageous.
