About the Role

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) is seeking a highly skilled Electrical Resource Optimization Specialist to join our team. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the efficient flow of electricity across the state, making it an exciting opportunity for those passionate about energy management.

As an Electrical Resource Optimization Specialist, you will be responsible for carrying out tariff responsibilities related to demand response and distributed energy resources. You will work closely with various departments, including Energy Market Operations, ICAP Market Operations, and Grid Operations, to integrate behind-the-meter net generation, demand response, and distributed resources into our capacity, energy, and ancillary services markets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Validate registration and enrollment of distributed energy resources in NYISO markets through review of contracts, utility bills, load reduction plans, and other documents.
  • Register new responsible interface parties and SCR/EDRP customers, update participant parameters, monitor and resolve pending enrollments, and collect and validate event data upon activation of the SCR/EDRP program.
  • Determine capability period and monthly load zone peak hours, calculate performance factors, zonal performance calculations, and ICAP to UCAP translation annually to support ICAP Market Operations department in seasonal setup activities.
  • Update DRIS notification system with contact information and resources, conduct SCR audits, monitor EDRP/SCR event advisories and activations, transfer information to MIS for scarcity pricing, and process EDRP/SCR event data for payments.
  • Perform required demand response calculations for determining SCR performance penalties and assess required shortfalls and sanctions.
  • Coordinate onboarding and review of materials for Behind the Meter: Net Generation (BTM:NG) resource participation.
  • Enforce demand response and distributed resource programs rules applicable to capacity, energy, and ancillary services markets using proprietary NYISO software.
  • Assess complex data from multiple sources across departments.
  • Develop recommendations, negotiate to gain buy-in, and finalize/implement solutions to complex problems.
  • Monitor, assess, and report on efficacy of ISO's demand response and distributed resources programs in capacity, energy, and ancillary services markets.
  • Finalize and ensure accuracy of millions of dollars in Market Participant settlements.
  • Advise NYISO market design team in design, development, implementation, and testing to achieve integration of demand response, BTM:NG, and distributed resources programs into NYISO capacity, energy, and ancillary services markets.
  • Uphold adherence to Tariff and NYISO manual rules for demand response and distributed resource programs, including conformance with business policy and procedures.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Operations Research, Data Science, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, or related discipline required; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Master's Degree strongly preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of Power Systems Engineering and/or Economics is preferred.
  • Three or more years of relevant industry-related or professional experience preferred; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. This position will be filled at a level commensurate with candidate qualifications. Both entry-level and experienced candidates are encouraged to apply.
  • Energy management, Distributed Energy Resource (DER), or Demand Response experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of electric industry criteria and practices helpful.
