Key Responsibilities
  • Care for thousands of newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses, ensuring their health and vitality.
  • Plant and transplant herbaceous plants and small trees, using your expertise to select the best species for our park.
  • Perform understory tree and shrub pruning and maintenance, using specialized equipment and techniques.
  • Implement Integrated Pest Management strategies to protect our plants from pests and diseases.
  • Mow and string trim our lawns and gardens, maintaining a high level of quality and attention to detail.
  • Maintain all essential equipment, including lawn mowers, trimmers, and other horticultural tools.
  • Weed, brush clear, and mulch our gardens and landscapes, ensuring they remain healthy and visually appealing.
  • Remove debris and trash from our park, keeping our green spaces clean and safe for visitors.
  • Assist with seasonal tasks, including snow removal and winter maintenance.
  • Oversee the daily tasks of our Seasonal Gardeners, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Conduct research and data collection to inform our horticultural practices and improve our park's sustainability.
  • Develop and maintain our horticultural database, tracking our plant collections and maintenance activities.
  • Interact with park patrons in a professional manner, providing information and assistance as needed.
  • Lead volunteer groups and train long-term Zone Volunteers, promoting a sense of community and ownership among our park users.
  • Conduct educational workshops and tours for the public, sharing your knowledge and expertise with visitors.
  • Support other members of our operations staff on a variety of tasks, from maintenance work to gardening.
Requirements
  • Two or more years of horticulture experience or a degree in horticulture and/or a related field.
  • Knowledge of and experience with meadow establishment and maintenance.
  • Experience with various landscape maintenance equipment, including lawn mowers and trimmers.
  • Knowledge of plant material, including turf, and the ability to identify and manage weeds and pests.
  • Strong communication skills and basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor, including lifting 40 pounds, in all weather conditions.
  • Hardworking, energetic, self-motivated, and dedicated to the details.
  • Valid NYS Driver License.
