Position Overview:

As a Research Veterinary Assistant, your primary responsibility will be to ensure the health and welfare of research animals while facilitating essential pre-clinical studies aimed at advancing medical knowledge and patient care.

Key Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of one year of relevant experience in a research laboratory or similar environment involving animal care.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Flexibility to complete tasks efficiently, recognizing that animal care is a continuous responsibility.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct daily rounds to assess the health of rodents and aquatic animals, reporting any concerns to veterinary staff.
  • Manage rodent colonies while adhering to established guidelines and protocols.
  • Document actions taken to promote animal welfare and support research initiatives.
  • Ensure that all areas used for procedures are maintained and adequately stocked.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Certifications:

  • No specific certifications required.

Work Complexity:

  • Requires critical thinking, sound judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be capable of making quick decisions and following detailed instructions from supervisors.
  • Flexibility and commitment to completing tasks are essential, as animal care is a continuous duty.

Experience:

  • At least one year of demonstrated experience in a research setting or with animal care.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and transport items weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Capable of standing, bending, and walking for extended periods.
  • May involve working with biological, chemical, and radiation hazards after appropriate training.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Required to wear lab jackets, gloves, and other protective gear as necessary.

Compensation:

The hourly pay range for this position is between $15.75 and $21.65, reflecting the anticipated range for new hires. Actual compensation will be determined based on various factors, including experience and qualifications, and does not include the value of the comprehensive benefits package offered by Cleveland Clinic.
