Position Overview

Role Summary

The Nutrition and Wellness Extension Specialist plays a pivotal role in spearheading educational initiatives aimed at developing, executing, and assessing research-driven, integrative statewide Extension programs tailored to the needs of limited-resource and socially-disadvantaged communities. This position is responsible for creating and disseminating training and educational resources for field personnel and their clients in the realm of nutrition, aligning with the overarching philosophy, policies, and objectives of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Program.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement community-based programs that bolster nutrition education across North Carolina.
• Provide statewide training for county staff and partners to enhance their capabilities in delivering nutrition education.
• Conduct nutrition education sessions in various communities as requested by partners and Extension staff.
• Supervise an Extension Associate, an Extension Assistant, and additional support staff associated with the Speedway to Health initiative.

Organizational Context

The Cooperative Extension Program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University operates as an educational outreach entity within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. It delivers research-based educational content and technical assistance to diverse audiences, addressing critical issues across four primary programmatic areas: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, Community and Rural Development, and 4-H Youth Development. The program collaborates with various partners, including North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to form a robust support system.

Qualifications

• A doctorate from an accredited institution in human nutrition, food science, or a closely related discipline.
• A minimum of three years of experience in program development within Cooperative Extension, non-profit, or private sectors.
• Proficiency in computer applications, including MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Office Suite.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, complemented by strong interpersonal abilities.
• Proven capability to engage and collaborate with colleagues and community stakeholders.
• Ability to connect with external constituencies, including businesses, state and federal agencies, and non-profit organizations.
• Competence in managing multiple priorities and demands effectively.
• Willingness to travel as required, including overnight stays and occasional weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

• In addition to a doctorate, five or more years of relevant program development experience.
• Registered Dietitian status is preferred but not mandatory.
• Professional background in nutrition and health fields.
• Experience in designing and implementing nutrition education programs for diverse community audiences.

Additional Information

This position is classified as a permanent, full-time role without tenure track, requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week over a 12-month period.
