Position Overview
The Department of Surgery at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is actively seeking a qualified faculty member at the Assistant Professor level to enhance our breast surgery program. The rank and compensation will be aligned with the candidate's experience and qualifications.
The ideal candidate will have a primary clinical focus on breast surgery, demonstrating expertise in breast-conserving techniques, nipple and skin-sparing mastectomies, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and axillary node dissection.
Applicants should be board certified or eligible, having completed a fellowship in breast surgery accredited by SSO/ASBrS, and must qualify for an unrestricted medical license in North Carolina. The successful applicant will be proficient in performing breast and axillary surgical procedures, engage in a multidisciplinary breast clinic alongside medical and radiation oncologists, and uphold a commitment to high standards of quality and patient safety.
Moreover, the candidate will play an active role in educating general surgery residents, fellows, and medical students. Interest in clinical and translational research is highly encouraged, supported by a robust infrastructure.
The new faculty member will collaborate with nine active faculty members in Surgical Oncology, treating patients with a variety of conditions including melanoma, sarcoma, and endocrine tumors, as well as a full range of gastrointestinal and breast malignancies. The breast service is a vital part of the Surgical Oncology Service, successfully attracting patients from a wide region.
The Breast Care Center (BCC) is under the leadership of Dr. Howard-McNatt, with contributions from Drs. Levine and Charity Glass, alongside three mid-level providers. The multidisciplinary breast cancer clinic operates on multiple days of the week, integrating surgical, medical, and radiation oncology services, supported by nurse navigators, plastic surgeons, genetic counselors, and research nurses. Survivorship clinics are managed by mid-level providers.
The BCC has recently renewed its NAPBC certification, maintaining full accreditation. The breast surgery division actively supports research initiatives within the Cancer Center, participating in NRG and Alliance trials, as well as investigator-initiated studies, including the I-SPY and RECAST trials for ductal carcinoma in situ.
