Chicago, Illinois, United States Thresholds Full time

Make a significant impact in the lives of young individuals as a Special Education Teacher at Thresholds High School. This Illinois State Board of Education certified therapeutic day school caters to students aged 16 to 21 who face ongoing serious mental health challenges. Operating throughout the year, the school offers a unique blend of flexibility and support aimed at helping students attain their high school diploma and achieve their transition objectives. The Young Adult Program provides extensive therapeutic resources to address issues such as anxiety, frustration, and school refusal, which have hindered their academic success in other educational settings.

As the primary educator in the classroom, you will guide a group of up to 8 students. Your responsibilities will include designing a curriculum that adheres to the school district's guidelines and state mandates. Lesson plans will be customized to accommodate various academic levels and prior achievements, ensuring alignment with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). You will oversee classroom activities and deliver daily instruction with the support of a teaching assistant. Monitoring and evaluating student progress is essential, as you will assist them in their academic pursuits, graduation, and future planning. Accurate documentation is crucial; you will conduct standardized assessments in line with district policies and state regulations while maintaining records of academic performance, attendance, and social integration.

The environment at Thresholds is collaborative and nurturing, equipping you with the necessary tools and resources to provide optimal student care. Given that students come from diverse suburban and Chicago districts, Thresholds High School collaborates closely with these educational systems and the Young Adult Program treatment team. Opportunities for training and professional development will enhance your expertise and broaden your skills in harm reduction, trauma-informed care, and other evidence-based methodologies.

To excel in this position, you should possess:

  • A passion for advocating mental health
  • Strong communication and relationship-building abilities
  • Patience and a readiness to engage with youth at their level
  • Proficient writing skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Experience working with high school-aged students facing mental health challenges
  • The capability to perform Therapeutic Crisis Intervention techniques, which involve moderate physical exertion, the ability to lift 40 pounds, and the mobility to kneel on the floor. Training for this is provided and is a requirement at Thresholds.
Requirements:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Education or Special Education is mandatory; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • A current Learning Behavior Specialist 1 (LBS1) license is required.
What distinguishes Thresholds:
  • No after-school or weekend obligations
  • Competitive compensation - Base Salary: $58,100 annually
    • Subject to increase based on educational qualifications and experience
  • Generous paid time off (9 federal holidays, 8 days of sick leave, 15-22 days of personal and vacation time)
  • Comprehensive dental and vision insurance, along with 4 medical insurance options
  • 403(b) retirement plan with a 3% employer match
  • A robust employee assistance program (EAP)
  • Public service loan forgiveness
