The Patient Care Assistant serves as a vital support role under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The primary goal is to enhance the patient experience by collaborating with the nursing staff, physicians, and the healthcare team to deliver exceptional care. Responsibilities include assisting patients with daily living activities and comfort measures, while ensuring a safe and culturally sensitive environment.
The role may involve performing basic patient care tasks such as assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), mobility support, and monitoring vital signs. Additional training may be required for advanced skills such as phlebotomy, wound care, and catheter management, depending on unit needs. Clerical duties, including data retrieval and supply management, are also part of the role. The Patient Care Assistant must thrive in a fast-paced setting, demonstrating effective communication and teamwork with the nursing staff and other healthcare professionals. A compassionate and respectful approach is essential, along with the ability to follow directions from various team members. Strong organizational and communication skills are crucial.
Key Responsibilities
1. Enhance Patient Experience: Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure patient-centered care, addressing individual needs and adhering to the care plan as directed by licensed professionals.
2. Safety and Compliance: Implement safety protocols to minimize risks and protect patient rights, maintaining confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
3. Direct Patient Care: Assist with hygiene, nutrition, mobility, and comfort measures, while also performing advanced skills as required by the unit.
4. Effective Communication: Utilize clear communication skills with patients, families, and team members, ensuring timely updates and documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
5. Team Collaboration: Support healthcare initiatives and participate in performance improvement activities, fostering a culture of shared leadership and accountability.
6. Infection Control: Maintain a clean and safe environment, adhering to infection control policies and utilizing proper hygiene practices.
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred; completion of a state-approved nursing assistant program is desirable.
Licenses and Certifications: Certification as a Nursing Assistant is preferred; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required upon hire.
Skills: Ability to follow detailed instructions, strong interpersonal skills, and effective verbal and written communication are essential. Candidates must be able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Minimum age for hire is 16.
