Under direction, the Mechanical Crafts Worker II performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, installation, and repair of County buildings and equipment. This position requires journeyman-level HVAC experience and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities- Repairs pumps, motors, transformers, heaters, wiring, switches, generators, fans, and other electrical and mechanical equipment
- Uses electrical test equipment and repairs pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, or electronic equipment and components
- Installs and maintains air conditioning units, condensers, compressors, evaporators, expansion and discharge valves, temperature and humidity controls, and services air filters
- Repairs and maintains boilers, cooling towers, coil fans, and chemically treats boiler water
- Maintains County elevators and fabricates, assembles, installs, repairs duct work, hand rails, steel security screens, steps, and platforms
- Uses gas and electric welders and makes routine purchases of small parts and supplies
- Servicing oxygen, nitrogen, and nitrous oxide equipment
- Builds and repairs cabinets, counters, bookshelves, hangs and repairs doors, installs and repairs locks, repairs Venetian blinds, desks, chairs, tables, constructs and moves partitions, installs paneling, Formica tops, windows, hangs tape and texture sheetrock, paints a variety of structures, refinishes furniture, paints signs, installs floor and ceiling tiles, repairs roofs, and works on other related projects
- Knowledge of standard tools, methods, practices, and materials involved in craft projects or work assignments
- Knowledge of prevailing building codes, safe work practices, and standard tools, methods, practices, and materials involved in several trades other than specialty
- Knowledge of County buildings and equipment and basic electronics
- Ability to estimate material and labor needs, read, understand, and work from general instructions, building plans, sketches, and specifications
- Ability to work in close proximity to jail inmates as assigned, establish cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work, use the tools, materials, and equipment involved in several trades, and act as a lead worker on special projects

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to vibration. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock.
The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, works with inmates in various demolition, excavation, and construction activities, uses a variety of materials, such as soil, gravel, concrete, lumber, drywall, roofing, and pipe.
The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
