Job Title: Additive Manufacturing Specialist

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Additive Manufacturing Specialist to join our team at SpaceX. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing all facets of the additive process, with a focus on machines, software, part design, and analysis.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop optimized build files to produce high-quality parts in minimum time with maximum consistency.
  • Work with other engineers to refine the design of existing parts and optimize new parts to leverage additive technology.
  • Investigate properties, geometric accuracy, and surface finish results to develop optimal print parameters, heat treatments, and design allowables for existing and new alloys.
  • Work with new machines from installation through troubleshooting, calibration, and maintenance, while developing standard operating procedures and communicating with machine suppliers to address needs and problems.
  • Communicate results and feedback to Responsible Engineers to continuously develop and improve hardware production.
  • Produce reports, procedures, and manuals to document results to mature development processes for production.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in aeronautical, astronautical, mechanical engineering, or other engineering discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience in propulsion component design or development of metallic additive technologies.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Master's degree in aeronautical, astronautical, or mechanical engineering.
  • Experience with operating additive machines, including parameter development and process control.
  • Experience with additive simulation software.
  • Experience with topology optimization software.
  • Knowledge of various additive and subtractive manufacturing and joining techniques for metals.
  • Solid understanding of optics and lasers.
  • Knowledge of relevant aerospace design and test specifications.
  • Familiarity with common engineering materials properties and processing attributes.
  • Experience with detailed design and operation of propulsion fluid components.
  • Experience with setting up and running multifactorial design of experiments.
  • Ability to perform trade studies using first principles and engineering fundamentals.
  • Proficient in basic principles of compressible and incompressible flow, thermodynamics, thermochemistry, mechanics, materials, and electrical circuits.
  • Experience with FEMAP, ANSYS, and similar structural analysis software tools.
  • Hands-on experience with aerospace component or fluid system testing.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to succinctly present recommendations.
  • Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight.
  • Able to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment.
  • Highly self-motivated and able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
