In recent years, the Greater Cleveland community has rallied around the shared objective of ensuring that every child has access to a high-quality education, with a variety of excellent schools available for families to choose from.
The Cleveland Plan outlines CMSD's strategy for transforming public education and holds the community accountable for the success of its students.
This initiative is backed by Ohio House Bill 525, which grants essential flexibility and autonomy to the district and its schools.
Our schools are empowered to manage their human and financial resources while being held accountable foroutcomes.
Principals bear the primary responsibility for establishing their schools as centers of high-quality education, focusing on personalized instruction, professional support for educators, and practices that yield measurable results.
The Cleveland Metropolitan School District has established standards of excellence that apply to all organizational components, including schools, principals, leadership teams, networks, and central office.
Alignment between the Standards of Excellence (SoE) and the district's Theory of Action ensures that principals can concentrate on student achievement while receiving timely and effective support from the central office.

CMSD Educators:
- Deliver instruction using appropriate resources and activities
- Guide students in subject matter aligned with state laws and district regulations
- Modify materials and methodologies to create relevant sequential assignments that challenge students
- Tailor the curriculum to provide individualized, small group, or remedial instruction to address the needs of every learner
- Encourage independent thinking and the expression of original ideas among students
- Foster a rigorous yet nurturing classroom environment
- Identify student needs and collaborate with other professionals to address health, attitude, and learning challenges
- Communicate effectively with parents and community members regarding student progress
- Supervise students during out-of-classroom activities throughout the school day
- Administer or oversee examinations
- Engage in professional development opportunities
- Maintain professional competence through district-provided in-service education and self-directed growth activities
- Work cooperatively with administrators to establish evaluation methods in accordance with district guidelines
- Involve parents and community stakeholders in the educational process of our students
In addition, CMSD educators should:
- Possess a valid Ohio teaching certificate in the relevant subject area (proof of certification required)
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field.
- Be Highly Qualified in the relevant subject area
- Demonstrate exemplary classroom teaching experience
- Exhibit a strong commitment to the success of urban students
- Understand the importance of providing access to rigorous education for historically underserved students
- Show ability to collaborate effectively with administrators, teachers, parents, and the community
- Work well as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Build meaningful connections with students and their identities
- Have a proven track record of overcoming challenges in the educational environment
