The Pharmacy Technician plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and effective delivery of medication management across all dimensions of care. As a member of the healthcare team at UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper, this individual collaborates with other team members to provide optimal care.
The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for managing and providing care in accordance with current policies and procedures. Key duties include:
- Filling, preparing, and delivering medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist/licensed independent practitioner.
- Consistently following policy and procedures to ensure quality and accuracy of work.
- Ensuring adequate supplies are available for continuous patient care.
- Triaging and escalating any questions or issues outside the pharmacy technician's scope of practice to the staff pharmacist or supervisor as needed.
- Using appropriate systems for processing patient information.
- Maintaining quality according to departmental and legal requirements.
- Appropriately operating pharmacy equipment.
- Maintaining considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration, and adverse effects.
- Demonstrating patient interview skills and strong written and communication skills with other healthcare professionals.
To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will possess:
- A High School Diploma or GED.
- No experience required; 1 year of relevant experience preferred.
- Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Trainee Registration required, Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration preferred.
- Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (ExCPT) preferred.
- Considerable knowledge and application of basic math skills, including ratio and proportion relationships.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Basic technology skills.
The following qualifications are preferred but not required:
- Considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration, and adverse effects.
- The ability to demonstrate patient interview skills and strong written and communication skills with other healthcare professionals.
This role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent repetitive body movements. The ideal candidate will be able to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs. occasionally and use Safe Handling Equipment as needed.
