Job Summary

This is an entry-level seasonal or part-time public contact position in administering recreation programs and activities. The Recreation Leader I works under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and is responsible for coordinating recreation programs, preparing facilities, and providing customer service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the coordination of recreation programs, including adult and youth sports, special events, and other recreational activities.
  • Prepare, set up, and clean up of baseball, softball, and soccer fields.
  • Perform general administrative duties, including answering telephones, assisting customers, collecting fees, and maintaining attendance records.
  • Promote the safety of all program participants.
  • Assist with the set up and take down of tables, chairs, and sports equipment for all facility activities and special events.
  • Oversee the regular operations of a community center, fields, and gymnasium facility.
  • Respond to patrons' needs for assistance and information in person and over the phone.
  • Operate a variety of standard office equipment, including personal computers.
  • Officiate or keep score for sports activities.
  • Perform basic custodial duties.
  • Set up and take down building furnishings and arrangements.
Requirements
  • Ability to lead and work effectively with program participants.
  • Ability to organize and lead recreation activities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing, and/or by whatever creative means are necessary to cross communication barriers.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates, participants, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and a variety of computer software.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and/or supplies required for the assigned activity up to 25 pounds.
  • Availability to work weekends and evenings as needed.
  • May require ability to acquire and maintain Child First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • May require ability to work outdoors in unpleasant weather conditions.
  • May require ability to tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds and windy conditions.
  • May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License.
Requirements of Work

The Recreation Leader I must be at least 18 years of age and have some supervisory or leadership experience. Participation in recreation activities is highly valued. Previous general customer service experience is preferred. First Aid and CPR certification are preferred. The employee must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of a criminal record check. Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
