The Position

The Global Therapeutic Discovery Initiative is focused on expediting the development of innovative therapies for cardiometabolic conditions.

A primary objective is the exploration and assessment of novel targets that can influence cardiometabolic diseases, propelling projects forward to enrich our therapeutic pipeline.

The therapeutic area teams work in close collaboration with colleagues globally, driving scientific innovation in diabetes and obesity to ensure critical scientific topics are pursued to support our aspirations.

The Lead Research Scientist will provide scientific leadership through external innovation, identifying and validating new drug targets, advancing groundbreaking therapies, and developing technologies to enhance drug research.

This role involves acting as a subject matter expert, offering strategic guidance to both internal and external project teams.

Responsibilities include managing external projects independently and supporting senior team members with their initiatives, while also contributing scientific expertise as a disease-area specialist.

Physical Requirements

Relationships

Reports to the Senior Director in Metabolic Research, overseeing the Diabetes, Obesity, and MASH Therapeutic Area within the Global Therapeutic Discovery Initiative.

Internal collaborations include interactions with research personnel, project managers, and colleagues across various therapeutic areas. External relationships involve partnerships, collaborations, and academic alliances.

Essential Functions
  • Oversee drug programs conducted in external partnerships and arising from external discovery efforts.
  • Conduct due diligence to ensure scientific rigor and value generation in external collaborations, aligning with the therapeutic area strategy.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to shape the external research agenda.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of theoretical knowledge and engage with the external scientific community in the fields of diabetes and obesity.
  • Independently drive key external collaborations with significant organizational impact.
  • Share responsibility for target progression and external pipeline support across the initiative.
  • Integrate new technologies, including AI & ML capabilities.
  • Critically evaluate scientific rationale, hypotheses, and interpretations of ongoing projects.
  • Effectively communicate the scientific strategy to key members of research committees, peers, and collaborators.
Qualifications

A PhD in a relevant field is required.

Minimum of 10+ years of pertinent experience in early drug discovery, particularly in target discovery and validation in obesity and diabetes.

Proven experience in providing technical and strategic insights in the fields of obesity and diabetes.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate closely with in vivo and in vitro teams.

Strong project management skills and drug discovery expertise to drive projects forward.

Experience in fostering innovation through the application of cutting-edge tools and technologies.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

High personal integrity and confidentiality.

Proficient in building trustful relationships and understanding diverse cultural perspectives to manage various stakeholders.

Strong collaboration and negotiation skills, with a focus on teamwork and a supportive, engaged, and creative approach.
