Job Summary

The YMCA of Long Island is seeking a highly skilled Lifeguard to maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. As a key member of our team, you will create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Pool Surveillance: Maintain active surveillance of the pool area to ensure a safe environment for members.
  2. Emergency Response: Know and review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  3. Member Engagement: Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff to promote a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  4. Safety Protocols: Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  5. Equipment Maintenance: Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  6. Pool Inspections: Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving and take corrective action as necessary.
  7. Chemical Testing: Perform chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and take appropriate action.
  8. Training and Development: Attend all staff meetings and in-service training to stay up-to-date on YMCA policies and procedures.
Requirements
  1. Minimum age of 16.
  2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid.
  3. Current Nassau County Lifeguard certificate.
  4. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  5. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
Physical Requirements
  1. Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  2. Meet strength and lifting requirements.
  3. See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
